Effects of Vetiver Grass Strips Technology (Vgt) Adoption on Poverty of Crop Farmers in Nigeria

Abia state faces severe soil erosion problem which affects agricultural production and poverty of crop farmers. The use vetiver grass strips technology (Vgt) helps control erosion, enhance yield, increase farmers’ income reduce poverty. However, there is a dearth information on the effect adoption Vgt. in State. Therefore, status adopters State was investigated. 250 farming households were randomly selected proportionate to size cells. Data socio-economics farmers, awareness Vgt, inputs outputs crops, expenditure food non-food items collected using structured questionnaire. analysed descriptive statistics, Foster, Greer Thorbecke model, probit regression at α0.05. results showed that average age respondents 48 years. household farm-size 6 members 2ha. 59.2% aware Vgt but 49.6% adopted. Most females with farm 1.57 ha, 42.7% them had tertiary education. Adoption reduced incidence by 21.0% for adopters. study recommends effective extension services being low-cost help level farmers hence government should invest more resources this technology. Further research be reduction involving intervention programme area.
